Motivation Regulation & SRL

Do you ever feel tired and uninterested in your school work? Or interested,  but just unable to get going? Does your assignment ever seem daunting– too daunting? How can you get started? And once started, what if you get bored? There always seems to be an infinitely long list of better things to do… How can you stay motivated so that you stay on task?

Motivation is not something that is elusive and uncontrollable. A lack of motivation is not something you just have to endure! Instead, you can learn to employ a variety of strategies to help you regulate your motivation to best help you!

There are many different strategies you can use to help you get motivated and help you stay motivated as you work on an academic tasks. Therefore, as a student, you should:

  • Be aware of your motivational state
  • Be aware of a variety of motivational strategies so that you can select a specific strategy that is appropriate to your specific task.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of that strategy in regulating your motivation. Ask yourself: is this strategy positively or negatively affecting my motivational state as desired? If not, it’s time to consider using a different motivational strategy. This is considered effective self-regulation of motivational states!

Remember: Regulating your motivation will help you become a more active and productive learner.

You will experience motivation struggles at various times:

  • the teacher could be terrible
  • you may not want to take the course, but it’s required
  • and other reasons!

However, regulating your motivation is your own responsibility. It’s great when you’re naturally motivated, but this won’t happen all the time. When you do experience motivational challenges, you need to regulate your own motivational state. Watch the video below to help you figure out what you can do to take charge of your own motivation!
