Task-Understanding & Goal Attainment

Task-Understanding & Goal Attainment

Self-talk can be used in preparation for tasks:

  • aiding the working memory
  • focusing on current thoughts
  • and the task at hand

Using self-talk for preparation for tasks (i.e. studying for a test you feel anxious about) establishes a set of phrases and foundation for positive self-talk that can be revisited when confronted with the actual challenge (i.e. writing the test).

Self-talk also contributes to task preparation and task-understanding; influencing perceived self-efficacy of knowledge about content and requirements of the task, and the capabilities to understand and complete them.

It is an important component of establishing and monitoring progress towards goal attainment.

Positive self-talk increases:

  • assertion
  • focus
  • self-confidence
  • self-awareness
